Top 10 Largest Statues In The World

Every country has some sculptures that are usually made to celebrate an event or to respect some God or public leader. Here is a list of the 10 largest idols of the world and as you will find that most of them are in Asia and are made in honor of Buddha.

1.Statue of Unity

The statue located in the Sadhu-Bet Island of Gujarat, India is more than 20,000 square meters and is surrounded by 12 square kilometers of artificial lake. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's 182 meter structure is the tallest in the world. This is twice the height of the Statue of Liberty in US. The total project cost is estimated to be Rs. Rs 2,989 crore has been depicted in the statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Home Minister of India, wearing huge, traditional dhoti and shawl on the river Narmada.

2. The Spring Temple Buddha

Located in Henan, Zhoukun Township of China, it is the world's second tallest statue. With lotus-shaped pedestal, its height comes to 128 meters or 420 feet. As of October 2008, the hill that stood on was being redesigned to include two additional pedestals. Upon completion, the statue will receive a height of 208meters (682 feet). The total cost of the project is estimated to be $ 55 million, of which 18 million will be spent on the statue. According to the original design, there were 1100 pieces of cast copper, which weighed 1,000 tons. Below the statue is a Buddhist monastery.

3.The Laykyun Setkyar 

The world's second tallest statue is located in Khatakan Taung, a village near Monywa, Myanmar. It is 116 meters (381 feet) tall and stands on the throne of height 13.5 meters (44 feet). Construction of the state started in 1996 and completed in February 2008. It was constructed by the main Abbot ven. Narada, who died on Novemember 22, 2006.

4. Ushiku Daibutu

Completed in 1993, this idol is located in Ushiku, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. Its total height is 120 meters (390 feet) and it includes a base of 10 meters and 10 meters of lotus platform. At the height of 85 m (279 ft) in the statue made of bone, there is also a lift to take visitors to the observation floor, also known as the 'Ushiku Arcadia', to remember the birth of Shinran, the founder of  Jōdo Shinshū.

5.The Guanyin of the South Sea of Sanya

This statue is located on the south coast of the Chinese province of Hainan, it is 108 meters (354 feet) long. The idol was made in a period of six years. It was established on April 24, 2005 with thousands of pilgrims in the presence of 108 eminent monks of different Buddhist groups of Taiwan, Macao, Hong Kong and Mainland China. There were also monks from Vajrayana and Theravada traditions.

6. The sculptures of the Emperors Yan and Huang

With the height of 106 meters, statues of Emperor Yan and Huang make the world's sixth tallest statues. They paint two of the earliest Chinese emperors, Yan Di and Huang Di. The construction took 20 years and construction ended in 2007. Founded in Zhengzhou it lies in the capital of Henan Province of the People's Republic of China. Experts believe that they are the symbol of the country's economy and politics.

7. Sendai Daikannon

This 100 meter (328 feet) tall idol is found in Sendai, Japan and is the seventh highest statue in the world. While depicting Japanese Buddhist Bodhisattva Kannon, there is a lift to take visitors on top of the statue.

8.Guishan Guanyin of the Thousand Hands and Eyes

This eighth highest statue of the world is the fourth highest in China. Made of Gilded bronze, it reflects Avalokitesvara. The statue of 99 meters (325 feet) is located in Changsha, People's Republic of China.

9. The Great Buddha of Thailand

                                 

Thailand's Big Buddha or Maharini Sakayamunee Visejchaicharn  and Phra Buddha Maha Nawamin, it is Thailand's tallest statue and the nineth highest statue around the world. 92 meters (300 feet) long and 63 meters (210 feet) wide statue is located in the Ang Thong province. It is made of cement and painted in gold. Its construction started in the year 1990 and is completed in 2008.

10.The Peter the Great Statue

This 98-meter monument of Peter the Great I located in central Moscow, at the meeting point of the Vodootvodiny Canal and Moskva River. Designed to remember the 300 year old Russian navy founded by Peter, the nineth highest statue of the world,was designed by  Georgian designer Zurab Tsereteli. Established in 1979, the estimated weight of this statue is containing one thousand tonnes of bronze, copper and stainless steel. Since the beginning, the construction and establishment of this stature has been the subject of controversy. In the November 2008 issue, Virtual Tourist voted it as the 9th tallest building in the world. In 2010, it was added to the list of the world's tallest statues by Foreign Policy magazine.
